When it comes to alcohol problems across the globe, some countries tend to guzzle down booze a lot more frequently than others. For example, regions across Asia and the Middle East might have reservations due to spiritual and social obligations, while Anglo-Saxon countries, like the United States and Canada, might have a higher propensity for alcohol due to availability and social popularity. However, as it turns out, one little European country is one of the biggest hot spots for alcohol problems in the world. Let’s take a closer look at a global capital of alcohol consumption: Slovenia.

Pushing the Threshold

Overall, representatives from the National Institute of Public Health (NIZJ) have speculated that Slovenes are pushing the threshold for the safe and permitted limit of alcohol intake (roughly five liters) for some time now. As of 2015, residents of this country were consuming about 11.5 liters of alcohol per capita, hinting at the unsafe nature of alcohol culture in this region.

Tipping the Global Rate

As the World Health Organization (WHO) reports, Slovenia shares its risky alcohol culture with Norway and Switzerland, and together these countries sit among the drunkest countries in the world. Even in this category, though, the little country of Slovenia still sticks out like a sore thumb. From 2003 to 2014, Slovenians were downing more alcohol than Norwegians and the Swiss, tipping the rate reported by other members of the European Union.

So which drinks are triggering this climbing rate of alcohol consumption? Based on additional reports, Slovenes prefer beer, which constitutes 114 liters per capita, and wine comes in at a close second, at 44 liters per capita. Although this rate decreased a bit in 2013, Slovenia has continued to experience another increase in drinking.
