In a world where drug abuse and addiction run rampant through the streets, parents have every right to be terrified of what activities their teens decide to take part in. Ultimately, teenagers are naturally programmed to take risks and experiment with new things, given the fact that their brains and bodies are undergoing radical changes. Unfortunately, as a result of this “explorational phase,” teens can sometimes have a tendency to partake in dangerous behavior (including experimentation with drugs and alcohol). While we can happily tell you that drugs like cocaine and crack are no longer as popular among the teenage demographic as they used to be, these two substances still pose a threat to teens’ well-being. Let’s take a closer look at some facts about cocaine and crack cocaine use among teens.
A Decrease in Activity
In 2014, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) confirmed that an estimated 913,000 American citizens met all qualifying criteria for cocaine addiction (based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Fortunately, this number marks a significant decrease from the 1.4 million cases originally recorded in 2008. (Researchers speculate the drop may have taken place around 2009.) In 2008, college students were the most frequent abusers of cocaine and the less frequent group in 2014.
The Rate of Cocaine Use Nowadays
Based on the annual study, the organization produced the following statistics concern cocaine use among teens:
- 8th Grade:6% (2012) to 0.9% (2015)
- 10th Grade:2% (2012) to 1.8% (2015)
- 12th Grade:9% (2012) to 2.5% (2015)
Second, here are the statistics concerning the use of crack cocaine among teens:
- 8th Grade: 0%
- 10th Grade:0%
- 12th Grade:4%
As the report indicates further, crack cocaine use has continued to fall among teens, although the numbers are still (somewhat) similar to the statistics recorded back in 2012. Overall, this even may be related to the fact that many teens are more knowledgeable about the risks of drug use. In fact, in 2015, 85% of teens in all three grades confirmed that they did not support or approve of cocaine.
