Alcoholism and alcohol abuse (simply put) belong to an umbrella of the some of the worst mental illnesses ever recorded on the planet, yet, in an ironic twist, these problems are also some of the most easily preventable illnesses known to science. While we cannot fully understand what drives people to become abusers or addicts, we can guarantee that there is a slew of health problems that are directly associated with tipping the bottle too many times to count. While a casual drink might seem harmless, add that to weekend binge after weekend binge, and you will quickly see how much damage this drug (perhaps one of the most harmful legal substances around) can wreak on your body. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most significant health risks stemming from excessive drinking.

Anemia

Interestingly, alcohol can wreak severe damage on the hematologic system (also known as the blood system), comprising the liver, spleen, blood, and bone marrow. As a result of consuming too much of this substance, a victim will begin to lose significant amounts of red blood cells, leading to the condition called anemia. Symptoms of this illness include fatigue, short breath, and a feeling of lightheadedness.

Cancer

Of course, one of the most obvious health risks stemming from alcohol use is cancer. As you consume alcohol, your body converts this substance into acetaldehyde, a carcinogenic substance that directly triggers the growth of cancer cells (mutated cells). The most common cancers occurring in excessive drinkers occur in the mouth, larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), esophagus, liver, breast, and colon (colorectal cancer). Sometimes, alcoholics will also consume cigarettes, which increase the risk of lung cancer.

Heart Disease

As a result of excessive drinking or alcoholism, a victim can suffer from heart disease (cardiovascular disease) or a stroke. After consuming large amounts of this substance, a person’s fat levels (triglycerides) will boost in the bloodstream, eventually resulting in high blood pressure and a stroke. Likewise, heavy drinkers will eventually suffer from cardiomyopathy (a dangerous weakening of heart muscles), abnormalities in heart rhythm, and ventricular fibrillation.

Always remember that alcohol does not have control over your life. You do. Are you suffering from a substance use disorder or a severe form of addiction?
