According to a new report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the number of pregnant women suffering from a substance use disorder has doubled since 2011. While the total number, approximately 4 in 1000, remains small, the rapid rate of increase is giving professionals reason to worry.
The addicted pregnant population is severely underserved in the treatment community. Part of the problem is that pregnancy care providers will refuse to accept pregnant patients struggling with substance addiction because they are unsure of how to provide appropriate care. The recommended response, however, does not actually differ significantly, from the response recommended for substance addiction in general: professional intervention and addiction treatment at the earliest opportunity.
Addiction is a progressive disease which means that it will get worse if left untreated. This poses particular risks to pregnant women as continued chronic drug use can be extremely damaging to the health of both the mother and the child.
