Needless to say, the current drug situation in Europe is not looking very promising, particularly for members of Great Britain. According to a recent survey conducted by the European Union, this island nation is the epicenter of the majority of drug problems over the entire continent, a very unnerving piece of information over the past year. So why is the use of drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine on the rise in Great Britain and how did it come to be a hot spot for addiction? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

Too Much Coke and Pot

Overall, the survey produced by the EU’s European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction sheds more light on the dire situation brewing in Great Britain. Cocaine use, on average, is skyrocketing among locals, while the rate of amphetamine use is twice as high as those of other countries.

Subsequently, many people have argued that this drug situation should serve as a wake-up call for government officials, who are preparing to loosen their collective grip on marijuana next year. According to David Blunkett, downgrading the laws on marijuana and shifting the substance to a class-C drug will allow police and other members of law enforcement to crack down on harder drugs like heroin.

Nevertheless, critics of this move have reiterated that pot is a gateway drug for addiction and these changes won’t serve a purpose.

The Numbers Don’t Look Good

So how severe is the situation in Great Britain? Here is what the survey comparing EU members and Norway confirmed:

  • 6.7 out of 1,000 residents between 15 to 64 years of age in Britain have drug problems, meaning they have used drugs like heroin or amphetamines for a long period of time.
  • 3.3% of British young adults had admitted that they had used cocaine in the previous year, in contrast to a minimal 0.5% among the French and 1.9% among Germans.
  • Following on the heels of France, 16.6% of British youth consume marijuana.
