Needless to say, anyone who is a fan of professional tennis will immediately recognize the name Andre Agassi. Also known by the nickname “The Punisher.” Long regarded as one of the greatest tennis players and possibly one of the most influential athletes of his time, Agassi dominated the playing field between the 1990s and the early 2000s. He is one of the first two male players to win the Career Golden Slam. Likewise, he has been an 8-time Grand Slam champion and won the golden medal for the United States at the 1996 Olympics. However, beyond the awards and fame, Andre Agassi also suffered from severe abuse of the nasty drug called crystal meth, as he explains in an interview from 2009. Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information about this scandalous situation.
A Tell-All Story
In his recent autobiography Open, Andre Agassi does not simply discuss his work with tennis but also admits a startling truth: he had dabbled in crystal meth during his career. According to Agassi, in 1997, he had consumed this highly addictive drug. After receiving a positive drug test, he lied by claiming he had unwillingly taken meth. Later, he was forced to write a letter to the ATP tour to explain that he had consumed a drink that had been spiked by “Slim” (his assistant). Although Agassi was ashamed of the letter, the lies did not end there.
Big Career Flop
Afterward, the International Tennis Federation remarked that they were ashamed of Agassi’s outlandish actions and disappointed by his lies. (Keep in mind that this group has been overviewing anti-doping efforts for the ATP and WTA world tours.) In an interview posted on People’s website, Agassi explained that using drugs to escape is a clear indicator of an underlying sickness. As he points out, after coming off a “high,” you will start to feel regret and deep sadness. Nowadays, Agassi has made amends through his honesty. Today, we still remember his iconic performances in the world of tennis.
