At some point, you have probably learned that drug addiction is a bit of a loose cannon, as you can’t fully know if you are an addict until you take the leap to try drugs. However, science has continuously shown us that addiction is not simply an environmental factor but is, in fact, genetic. Obviously, the debate about “nature vs. nurture” has pretty much existed since ancient times, forcing us to question if we are truly products of our environment or whether mom or dad passed on some unpleasant genes. As it turns out, though, researchers have recently determined that genetics alone don’t determine addiction; their interaction with their environment is a major factor. Let’s take a closer look at the connection between drug problems and epigenetics.

How Drugs Affect Behavior

Simply put, epigenetics is the study of how changes in people’s behavior can trigger alterations in their genetic code (“epi” refers to “above” or “in addition”). For example, if people start using nicotine or cocaine, their behavior will change drastically, which may result in some changes to the DNA, which carries the structure of our design, including neurochemical processing. In theory, scientists believe this study will open gateways for addiction research and serve as a platform for determining why some people become addicts and others are healthy.

Genetic Expression

In keeping with the study of epigenetics, scientists have determined that interactions between our genes, combined with the experiences we have and the environment we inhabit, directly impacts our physical and mental health. Further research has also confirmed that certain behaviors may “switch off,” so to speak, certain links in our genetic makeup. Obviously, you cannot change your genes, but you can turn a few on and off involuntarily.
