When push comes to shove, females tend to suffer from a mixed bag of overflowing emotions and physical pain on a daily basis, thanks to the lovely gift called hormones. Although these chemicals are 100% essential and beneficial for female health, girls and women around the world may ask a few questions, possibly including “why does life have to throw hard punches?” In the end, though, this mixed bag of essential hormones not only triggers a roller coaster of emotions but (for some women) can also trigger severe cases of relapse. Let’s take a closer look at the link between female cycles and addiction problems.
A Vulnerable Population
Based on a study conducted by researchers at Vanderbilt University, female hormonal cycles will not only put women at a higher risk of developing addiction but will also put them in a greater danger of suffering from relapse. Ultimately, Dr. Erin Calipari (assistant professor of pharmacology at Vanderbilt) explains that women constitute a weaker portion of the human population, given their susceptibility to addiction and relapse. As part of her studies, Dr. Calipari found that a boost in fertility hormones made women stronger and more disciplined (especially in regards to cravings).
Different from Men
As Dr. Calipari also points out, the process of drug addiction in women may take root in a different manner than with men (given the hormonal fluctuations). Interestingly, throughout history, scientists have only used male animals for test subjects to prevent hormonal interference (a commonality with females). In regards to the recent study involving female animals, though, the Vanderbilt team discovered that female will eagerly spend more money (in the test animals’ case, push more buttons) to receive more of an addictive drug. However, the precise elements put into play to make women more vulnerable have not yet been determined.
