It is extremely likely that at some point in their lives, most people will drink alcohol. At many social functions, it is common that people will be partaking in drinks. For most people, this does not turn into a problem. Some people will develop an addiction to alcohol. Drinking moves beyond an occasional social activity and into an everyday habit.
Once you develop an alcohol addiction, you will start to show the signs of this problem. Alcoholism can mean that instead of drinking with friends, you prefer to drink alone or at times of the day that is not normal. This can mean starting your morning with a drink. Drinking daily can hurt your body in various ways. Once you have developed alcoholism, you will ignore these often painful problems and continue to drink. You will also experience a lack of control over the amount that you drink. If you are addicted to alcohol, you may become depressed and irritable when talking to your friends and loved ones.
After you have developed a dependence on alcohol, displaying all of the above signs, you will go through withdrawal if you quit drinking. The process of alcohol withdrawal has three stages. The first stage can begin as soon as six hours after your last drink and as long as one day after the last drink.
- Stage One – This is the mildest stage of withdrawal. You will experience nausea and vomiting, heart palpitations, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and tremors. This stage often lasts around eight hours.
- Stage Two – The symptoms become slightly more severe. You will experience high blood pressure, elevated body temperature, sweating, mood disturbances, and an irregular heartbeat. This stage can last anywhere from one to three days.
- Stage Three – This is the most severe stage of withdrawal. Your symptoms can include hallucinations, intense confusion, seizure, and fever. This stage can last up to a week.
With the last, most severe stage lasting up to a week, the dangers of alcohol withdrawal can be perilous for anyone who is going through the process. It can also affect every individual differently.
In the most severe stages, alcohol withdrawal can be deadly. No one should decide to quit drinking cold turkey without the supervision of medical professionals.
