Sometimes, drug films are just a-dime-a-dozen Hollywood comedies or dramas. But, then you have a special group of drug movies that are fun, heart-pounding, and highly informative in the most unexpected ways. Instead of focusing on a victim’s journey to overcome addiction, these films focus on the terrifying trips experienced during a high. Or, the dangers accompanying illegal drug use. One ideal example is the film Limitless (2011), a sci-fi thriller that hammers in the message of drug abuse with a really fun twist. Let’s take a closer look and see how this genius film relays an important metaphor for drug use. Also, how it provides a fun thrill-ride into human intelligence.

The Real “Miracle Drug”

While this has since been proven false, some scientists once thought humans only used a small percentage of our brains, and, if the rest was activated, we could achieve genius-level intelligence. In the film Limitless, Bradley Cooper plays writer Eddie Morra, a man whose life is turned upside down (or maybe right-side up) when he volunteers to take a drug that activates 100% of the human brain. In a flash, he can learn new languages, play instruments, and solve complex equations nearly overnight, but that gift comes with a terrible price.

A Metaphor for Abuse

While purely fictional, Eddie’s predicament does answer another question: how desperate will a human be once they have been given superhuman abilities? In essence, you could argue that this theme plays on the grim reality of dependence and habituation, two elements that go hand-in-hand with addiction. Once a person gets a taste of heroin or meth, he/she isn’t going to want to let go that easily.

So is Limitless more genius than we give it credit for (no pun intended)?
