Every time we turn around, the little green plant called marijuana seems to be causing a new wave of trouble across the United States, despite the string of victories that have set in over the past four years. While Oregon and Colorado plow ahead in the race to promote the herb, states like New Jersey are still wrapped up in a big, green, smoking pile of confusion and collision. In fact, if you were to walk up to any New Jersey resident who is listed as a medical cannabis patient, they would probably tell you their medical program is far too testy for their liking. Although relief may be coming around the corner, lawmakers still cannot agree on the progression of pot medication. Let’s take a closer look at the medical marijuana holdup in New Jersey.

Something Is Fragrant in Jersey

Later, on January 15, 2019, New Jersey lawmakers will convene to discuss improvements to the medical marijuana plan (or simply delay the inevitable). Earlier in 2018, the state government introduced Bill S10, but the new document has become the focal point of a continuous argument between New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Senator Steve Sweeney (both Democrats). In a strange twist, Bill S10 also appears to be connected to the recreational debate about the plant, which also doesn’t help the situation.

An All-Too-Complicated Program

At this time, medical marijuana patients in New Jersey have to pay about $500 for a single ounce of low-quality cannabis medication and, by state law, are required to re-certify qualifying conditions after a period of 30, 60, or 90 days (based on the instructions of a doctor). Although regulations from the Christie administration have begun to dwindle (meaning card purchases are much cheaper than before), S10 will continue to cut the 6.25% sales tax on medical-grade marijuana. Until the time that this bill is passed, though, patients will still have to endure a rocky road to achieving alternative medication.
