Needless to say, each of us can agree that a lot of television shows include references to drugs and alcohol, both subtle and obvious. From innuendos in kids’ shows designed to appeal to the adult audiences, to comedies that include hilariously over-the-top scenes of intoxication, many famous shows have featured problems with alcohol, party drugs, and a bit too much cannabis for our comfort. So what about the shows that don’t just include stories about drugs but also singularly focus on these? Let’s take a closer look at the most intoxicated TV shows ever put on your small screens.

1. COPS (1989-present)

Audiences certainly got an eye-opener to the darker side of humanity with this series. One of the most iconic reality TV shows, COPS is still considered the papa of television programs focusing on drugs and alcohol (as well as reality shows, in general), and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. From busting hillbilly meth labs to cracking open a cocaine nest, the men and women of law enforcement exposed audiences to some pretty serious crimes. Here is a closer look at how many times certain drugs are mentioned on this program, a record among television programming:

  • Meth: 530
  • Heroin: 109
  • Crack: 71

2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015)

In hindsight, you probably saw this one coming from a mile away. Since the first edition of the series aired, CSI served as the CBS alternative to Law and Order (1990-2010), and, although it didn’t run as long as its predecessor, this show, which centered on men and women working in a crime lab, still opened audiences’ eyes to some terrifying drug offenses. Here is a look at how many times drug were mentioned on this notable show:

  • Alcohol: 460
  • Meth: 326
  • Cocaine: 56
  • Heroin: 52

3. The Simpsons (1989-present)

Based on reports from Project Know, animated programs tend to run low in terms of alcohol and drug references, but, much to our surprise, Matt Groening’s iconic series The Simpsons has landed the third-place spot on our list. Patriarch Homer Simpson seems to spend most of his spare time eating donuts and chugging beer, lending The Simpsons the number two rank for 759 mentions of “alcohol.” Even the episode “Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment” (season 8, episode 18; 1997) holds a record for the third most frequent number of alcohol references in any television episode of any show.
