Overall, Ohio is a state renowned for many amazing things. Fans of football will instantly be reminded of the famous (and sometimes infamous) Ohio State Buckeyes, one of the most renowned college teams. Others might enjoy the wildlife and scenic resorts across Lake Erie, Zanesville, or Cincinnati. Perhaps you are a fan of the Columbus skyline and its nightlife. In an unfortunate turn of events, though, the Buckeye State has become the focal point of massive drug problems (besides the Opioid Crisis) that stem from crystal meth and amphetamine abuse. Based on recent reports coming from this Midwestern state, the situation has gotten much more serious. Let’s take a closer look at the reality of crystal meth and amphetamines in Ohio.

Combined Overdose Fatalities

As part of the Alliance (organized by the College of Health Sciences and Professions at Ohio University) a team of researchers measured the combined rate of overdose fatalities from 2010 to 2017 and focused on the use of cocaine and psychostimulants (specifically crystal meth and amphetamines). According to Rick Hodges (director of the Alliance and Executive-in-Residence at the College of Health Sciences and Professions at Ohio University), this research program will provide the university with a deeper understanding for early warning signs of a drug crisis (in wake of the current Opioid Crisis).

Disconcerting Details

Ultimately, the number of fatalities caused by crystal meth and amphetamines are staggering and absolutely terrifying. However, Dennis Lowe (commander of the Major Crimes Unit of Athens, Hocking and Fairfield counties), is not surprised by these reports in the least, given the amount of death and destruction his units have witnessed on the streets. In an 8-year period, the number of deaths caused by crystal meth and amphetamines skyrocketed by 5,000% (from 9 deaths in 2010 to 509 deaths in 2017). Now, you might be able to understand why officials from the Buckeye State are so terrified.
