The Risky Business of Southern California Addiction Centers

You probably don’t need us to tell you that addiction treatment is risky business. From the moment you step into a residential treatment facility, you can’t tell if you will reemerge as a healthy person or will plunge back into the darkness of your sickness. After all, the facility is merely there to provide medical, psychological, and emotional support during this difficult time. Nevertheless, the success rate should never be mixed with the exploitation of patients, an unfortunate trend that is sweeping through Costa Mesa and other Southern California addiction centers as of 2017. Let’s take a closer look at this major problem and find out some more information.

Suffering Left Untreated

For many patients, much like a mother who was interviewed for the Orange County Register, treatment centers across Southern California aren’t always positive places, despite incessant advertising. By this point, you are probably familiar with patient brokering (the deceptive practice of using patients to make money), but the problems arising in this sunny corner of our state are nothing short of outrageous.

According to recent reports, one patient dies every 15 days in a California rehab center.

As the Orange County Register reports, some medical staff at one facility explained how other addiction specialists were not properly attending to patients; one, in particular, died after leaving the location.

Too Many Complaints to Count

Unfortunately, this trend seems to be on the rise. From 2013 to 2016, more and more people began filing complaints against rehabilitation facilities, as state regulators report. Additionally, insurance companies conducted numerous investigations and, in some cases, have filed lawsuits against these organizations. In fact, in 2017, a judge from the Los Angeles Superior Court found one of the biggest rehab operators in Southern California to be guilty of fraud.

In a counterargument, rehab operates have pointed out how rehab patients are extremely difficult to handle, with many contemplating self-harm and/or suicide.
