When it comes to the global debate on marijuana, the United States is front and center as a divided nation in terms of complete legalization. As of March 2018, nearly half of the country has legalized medical use for the drug (with an additional eight states fully legalizing recreational use, as well), and politics have become a melting pot of varying opinions. Recently, California’s Governor Brown initiated a law that effectively banned pot in schools. Meanwhile, the Mormon Church has fully supported legalizing marijuana in the State of Utah. Even more interesting, one important piece of news may have been swaying readers in the wrong direction. According to recent reports, the White House is going to make a big step towards legalizing weed in the U.S. Let’s take a closer look at the story.
A Big Step for Marijuana
Recently, an article in Buzzfeed News suggested that the White House may be re-reviewing its stance on legalized marijuana. According to the report, President Trump had established the Marijuana Policy Coordination Committee (MPCC) to study and collect information concerning the potentially disastrous side effects of the drug. Reporters also gathered information about the MPCC’s demands for reports from the Department of Defense, DEA, and EPA. However, recent events greatly contradict this more negative approach to the drug.
Keeping Promises
According to Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), the president plans to keep his promises about legalizing weed, after all. In a recent interview with Fox Business, Rohrabacher confirmed that the White House plans to reveal its position on marijuana once the election has concluded. Rohrabacher himself is an avid supporter of the cannabis movement.
This reveal is not an especially big surprise when compared to events two years ago. On his campaign trail in 2016, President Trump had promised to fully legalize marijuana (both recreational and medical) for the American people. His ultimate goal is to grant full power to state governments, who are the rightful leaders in this matter.
