How do you create awareness about drug abuse and addiction? Just get the children and young adults involved in the fight, and you’ve got yourself a grade-A war front. From education in schools to charities in inner cities, the youth are getting involved in protecting the community, an act which can serve two purposes. After all, this participation ensures these children protect others, as well as learn more about substances that can potentially kill them. Just ask the teens who took part in the “Teens Make Music” Awards of 2019. Let’s take a closer look and learn more.

Celebrating Freedom from Drugs

Overall, the “Teens Make Music” awards focus on high school students, from 14 to 18 years of age, who submit original songs they have written about living above the influence or the dangers of drug use. As part of the event (created by MusiCares®), the winners attended the 2019 GRAMMY Awards and received a boatload of other prizes for their creative work. If anything, this program shows that music can bring the people of the world a little bit closer together.

Winners of the Golden Ticket

Here is the lineup of the four winning songs from the 2019 awards:

  • 1st: “Lost” – David Bond and Andrew McMains (Salem, Oregon)
  • 2nd: “Addicted” – Elena Giddens (New York, New York)
  • 3rd (tie): “Where Did You Go” – Julie Ratzlaff (New York, New York)
  • 3rd (tie): “Demons” – Caleb McDonald (Salem, Oregon)

In an interview about her song, Giddens described the complex situation concerning the private and social perspectives on drugs. At home, she explains, you are taught to stay away from drugs, but in the company of friends, those attitudes tend to shift toward a darker hole. Once you’re addicted, you can’t stop using, no matter how hard you try.
