Tim Allen’s Dangerous Struggle With Alcohol and Cocaine Addiction

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ALCOHOL METABOLIZATION

When it comes to his long and successful career, you might say that Tim Allen has gone “to infinity and beyond”. At the time, little was known about Tim Allen and his bouts with addiction. He has truly entertained the entire world. After rising to fame as a standup comedian, the actor landed the role of Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor. On the hit series Home Improvement he became a household name, especially after lending his voice to the iconic character Buzz Lightyear in the Disney/PIXAR hit Toy Story (a role he has continued to fill to this day).

From additional funny roles in Galaxy Quest and the holiday classic The Santa Clause, Allen had already cemented himself as a celebrity comedian, but what many of his fans may not realize is that he has been through worse than a few disgruntled casting disputes. Overall, Tim Allen has been at the forefront of drug crimes and suffered from severe addiction to alcohol and cocaine. Let’s find out more about his malady and see how he managed to pull through.

A Stint in Prison

Before he was the “Tool Man” Taylor, he had worn a uniform of a different kind in the 1970s. This is when he was convicted for felony drug trafficking. In an interview with Closer magazine, the comedian opens up about his arrest at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport in Michigan (1978) for the possession of cocaine. After pleading guilty to two charges of drug trafficking, Allen spent 2 years and 4 months locked up in a federal prison (based in Minnesota) before he was released on parole in 1981. According to Allen, his time in prison brought a new sense of humility.

Coping with the Real World

Sometime later, in 1984, Allen married Laura Deibel. The couple had a daughter about 5 years later. After landing the role on Home Improvement, however, he quickly took another downward turn. He committed a DUI offense in 1998. Directly after the charges, he entered a rehab center to be treated for alcohol abuse.

Overall, Allen explains how he is no longer that guy that he was during Home Improvement. However, we are happy to tell you that, as of 2018, Tim Allen is 21 years sober from his addiction.
