TOMMY CHONG’S PERCEPTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION IN CANADA
- January 5, 2019
Chances are, if you grew up in the 70s or 80s or lived your younger years during that time, then you are probably familiar with the comedy duo Cheech and Chong. After all, who could forget the image of two crazy guys smoking gigantic marijuana cigars in a filthy van? In many cases, you could argue that Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin not only capitalized on the popularity of the then-controversial marijuana but also pioneered a whole new attitude towards the plant in radio, TV, and film. While certainly played for laughs, the marijuana debate is not a funny matter for one member of the duo. In fact, Canadian-born Tommy Chong strongly believes that his native country is feeding the black market, not suppressing it. Let’s take a closer look at what the iconic pot smoker had to say.
Lack of Control
In a recent interview with the Canadian Press and the Toronto Star, Tommy Chong explained that the Canadian government is providing an ideal breeding ground for black market dealers and has failed to suppress these criminals. Keep in mind that, despite his initial negative thoughts about this decision, the comedian is still sympathetic to his country’s cause. Referring to this action as the “Canadian way,” Chong explained the federal government simply wanted to take control of a drug to maintain public safety, but, unfortunately, this decision has backfired.
Handful of Pot, Mouthful of Trouble
So, why is he adamant about this case? Chong strictly believes the Canadians will start visiting illegal sellers due to the fact that pot dispensaries are few and far between, and he is absolutely correct. As indicated in reports from 2018, Canadians who live in remote parts of the country cannot easily access marijuana shops in urban areas, meaning they will seek out “alternatives.”
Ending on a happier note, Chong noted that he was proud his country beat the U.S. to the punch, comically adding that Canada took the peaceful route.
