For many people, their addiction stemmed from having too much stress in their lives and not being able to cope. That’s why stress can become a major trigger during recovery. But not all stress is bad! Stress is what helps get you off the couch and keeps you motivated during daily tasks. In order to avoid a relapse, it’s important to understand your risk factors and how to manage your daily stress.

Here are some ways to understand and manage your stress:

#1 Know when you need a break. If you’re beginning to feel overwhelmed it may be time to take a break. Allowing yourself some time for rejuvenation can allow you to recharge and push through. Most importantly it’ll help avoid a relapse.

#2 Fear can keep you safe. Sometimes the very act of being afraid is what will keep you from falling over the edge.  Own your fear and understand that it will keep you cautious – and on the road to recovery!

#3 Anxiety will help you choose friends wisely. When it comes to recovery, nothing is more important than the people that surround you. It is important to choose people who have the same values and goals as you, and anxiety will help you accomplish that. It may be nerve-wracking building new relationships during recovery, but anxiety can help you navigate.

#4 Stress can be channeled into excitement. Part of what makes stress and anxiety so powerful is the wave of adrenaline that follows. Learning to channel that adrenaline into positive energy and intentions can help you succeed in the long run. Using physical agitation and turning it into actions will help you accomplish your goals and in turn, your recovery.

#5 Stress can help you identify the things that are most important to you. Part of what makes recovery so difficult is learning to reprioritize your time and money. If you’re finding yourself overly stressed, it may be likely due to the fact that you aren’t prioritizing the right things. Take a step back and reevaluate the cause of your stress and you’ll find the answers may be clearer than you ever imagined!
