In the wake of drug crisis after drug crisis, we can only ask one question: how do you handle the ever-growing burden of drug abuse and addiction spreading through your country? Considering how many people abuse dangerous substances like crystal meth, heroin, cocaine, nitrous oxide, and alcohol, you have to wonder how it is possible to get a grip on millions of people. After all, not everyone does drugs in plain public view, and sometimes the addicts intermingle with the criminal underbelly. Ultimately, in response to this growing problem, England has responded in a rather unusual way: officers will no longer put addicts in jail and will (instead) put them into support services. How can this help our neighbor across the Atlantic? Let’s take a closer look and find out.
Preventing Further Drug-Related Deaths
Ultimately, the Thames Valley Police (TVP) is hoping this new approach to dealing with addicts will not only prevent future reoffending but also reduce the drastic drug-related death rate. In 2017 alone, officials confirmed that the national rate of drug deaths skyrocketed by 29%. In that light, Assistant Chief Constable Jason Hogg has revealed this new tactic is not a gentle approach and explained how “softness” is not a viable option for saving hundreds of lives.
As part of this new program, people who have been found in possession of small quantities of drugs will not be sent to jail. Instead, these men and women will be forced to take part in community support services. While these people will not be required to take part in these activities, if they do fail in their services, these men and women could face future prosecution if they commit the same crime.
Drug Addiction Is a Health Problem, Not a Crime
According to Lucy Dawe (a representative of the charity Cannabis Skunk Sense), people who are suffering from a severe mental problem (addiction) should not be locked up. Ultimately, these victims should receive the help they deserve. However, Dawe did confirm that decriminalization should not be a factor. If a person does not take part in the social service programs, this individual should still be subject to prosecution.
