UPDATES ABOUT THE MARIJUANA INDUSTRY FROM THE MARYLAND MEDICAL CANNABIS FORUM
- November 27, 2018
At this time, Maryland is preparing to celebrate the first anniversary of the legalization of medical marijuana sales, and, fortunately for the pro-cannabis community in the little state, the entire system is maturing properly. As of November 2018, an estimated 35,000 patients have successfully completed registrations, and 69 dispensaries have received licenses. So what could happen to make the situation in the Old Line State even more promising for marijuana aficionados? Recently, officials announced the cannabis-infused edibles may soon be available for registered patients. Hosted in Baltimore earlier in November, the inaugural Maryland Medical Cannabis Forum spoke about the possibility of the introduction of edibles and providing information to doctors in Maryland about a variety of practices. Let’s take a closer look at some updates the group has provided.
1. Edibles on the Horizon
Recently, Joy Strand (executive director of the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission) gave patients who do not smoke or vape pot a ray of hope. Instead, some people prefer to consumed marijuana-infused edibles, and this new trend is particularly common among elderly marijuana patients (according to accounts from multiple Maryland dispensaries). Although the commission is working hard to create an edibles program for the state, officials still need to iron out more details before a date can officially be set.
2. Designer Cannabinoids
While the public is familiar with THC and CBD, neurologist Jokūbas Žiburkus, the CEO of Canntelligence (part of the University of Houston) has made the argument that emerging cannabinoids could change the future of medical marijuana. Naturally, cannabinoids latch onto critical aspects of our endocannabinoid system. Although some researchers have investigated the benefits of THC and CBD, other cannabinoids like CBG, CBN, CBC, and CBDV might also provide a long list of health benefits to patients.
