Nar-Anon is the family component of Narcotics Anonymous; similar to the relationship between Al-Anon and Alcoholics Anonymous. Like Al-Anon, Nar-Anon is also a 12-step program for family and friends who have been affected by another’s substance abuse. The program relies on group sharing and teaching seminars that can help people regardless of whether their loved ones have quit their substance use.
While Nar-Anon is a spiritual program it is not a religious program. In other words, Nar-Anon is based on the idea that people are dependent on a “Higher Power” for their healing, personal growth, and peace of mind, but the precise “Higher Power’ is undefined and the program would be considered entirely nondenominational.
If someone else’s narcotics use is negatively affecting your life, you may want to check out a Nar-Anon meeting in your area. Addiction is a progressive disease and the problems caused by your loved one’s narcotics use will continue to get worse if left untreated; it is important to get help as early in the process as possible.
