Marijuana has been front and center in recent reports. From the argument for recreational marijuana to the legalization of the drug in multiple states, people are still mixed over the use of this narcotic drug in our society. Ultimately, the debate has taken a new turn this month. Recently, an official from the White House Drug Office released a statement that a policy panel will be conducting a thorough investigation of how legalized marijuana is impacting our states. This announcement was a direct response to an accusation from the popular website BuzzFeed, which accused the panel of describing marijuana as a deadly and detrimental addictive to our culture. So, what is the White House’s answer to this problem and what is the root of his debate? Let’s take a closer look.

States that Legalized Marijuana

Since the debate began, the District of Columbia and thirty U.S. states have legalized a version of marijuana, while the district and eight states have established the most detailed and rigorous regulations on this drug. Mostly, medical marijuana comprises the largest amount and is greatly restricted, even in states that have legalized it.

Here is the legal status of marijuana in the United States:

  • Medical marijuana: Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia
  • Recreational marijuana: Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon, Nevada, Washington
  • Illegal status: Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming

Details about the Cannabis Study

After holding a consultation with the Executive Office of the President’s Office of National Drug Control, a U.S. Senator proposed a response to BuzzFeed. According to the initial report, 14 agencies in the federal government will be collecting and sending data concerning the overall threat of the drug in our nation and the negative repercussions of causal and medicinal use. Agents informed the Colorado senator that advanced data and statistics would be utilized as part of the study, but, aside from this, no other details were provided.
