When looking at drug use across the country, it’s clear we have a big public health problem. On one hand we have substances like alcohol being promoted, on the other hand the opioid epidemic is killing thousands a year. Drug overdoses are taking thousands of lives a year and some states are getting hit harder than others. So which states have the highest drug use rates and overdose deaths? Let’s take a look at the top 5 states with the worst drug use in the US. All these stats are according to the CDC.

1. West Virginia

West Virginia has the highest drug overdose death rate in the US, with 80.9 deaths per 100,000 people. The state has been at the epicenter of the opioid epidemic and fentanyl and heroin are big contributors to the thousands of overdose deaths. Despite efforts to address the issue West Virginia is still in the midst of a public health crisis.

2. Tennessee

Tennessee is second with 56 deaths per 100,000 people. The state has seen a big spike in opioid related deaths and methamphetamine use is also on the rise. Tennessee is increasing access to treatment programs to combat drug abuse but the problem is still big.

3. Delaware

Delaware is third with 55.3 deaths per 100,000 people. The opioid crisis has hit Delaware hard and fentanyl is a big contributor to overdose deaths. The state has launched multiple initiatives to address addiction but the high death rate shows just how big the problem is.

4. Louisiana

Louisiana has 54.5 deaths per 100,000 people and is fourth on this list. Opioid addiction, especially involving heroin and fentanyl, is causing a big spike in overdose deaths. Despite efforts to address the problem it’s still a big issue for the state.

5. Maine

Maine is fifth with 54.3 deaths per 100,000 people. Like many other states Maine has been hit hard by the opioid crisis with fentanyl and heroin being the main contributors to overdose deaths. The state’s rural areas have unique challenges when it comes to access to treatment and recovery services.
