What do you consider to be the most dangerous drug in the entire world? For some of you, this decision might be pretty easy. On one hand, you might choose illegal opiates like heroin and fentanyl, as they are two of the triggers of the American Opioid Crisis. On the other hand, some of you might choose crystal meth, seeing how it is a combination of mind-altering, tissue-damaging toxins like drain cleaner and painkillers. However, what would you say if we told you that you were wrong on both accounts? According to recent studies, the most dangerous substance on the planet is everyone’s friendly neighborhood drug: alcohol. Why is this the case, though? Let’s take a closer look at why booze tops the list as the most dangerous drug on Earth.

How Researchers Ranked the Drugs

Ultimately, the team of researchers ranked the drugs (on a scale of 0 to 100) along 9 areas related to the kind of harm the drugs inflict on humans and 7 categories of harm the drugs can inflict on people besides the users. Additional factors include physical, mental, and social harms and potential impediments to life expectancy, relationships, crime, and expenditures. Ultimately, the team assessed which criteria were more important than others, in regards to a drug’s severity.

Legal, Regulated Harm

Based on the final report formulated during the study, the team of researchers marked the following substances as the top 5 most dangerous drugs in the world:

  1. Alcohol
  2. Heroin
  3. Crack Cocaine
  4. Methamphetamine
  5. Cocaine

As part of the panel, led by Professor David Nutt, speculated that the established drug classification system does not consider how harmful these drugs truly are and do not relate to the severe harm that is caused. Nutt was ultimately shocked by the rankings, emphasizing his concern over the fact that alcohol and nicotine (two 100% legal drugs) appeared at the top of the list.
