Part of what makes being a parent so tough is that long-lasting bond you share with your child. Obviously, your son or daughter needs to grow up and behave independently in good time, but mothers and fathers never stop caring for their children. To them, that parental love continues from the age of 2 all the way to the age of 40 and beyond. So, with such a strong bond set in place, imagine the horror of discovering that your son or daughter suffered from painkiller addiction, all caused from an accident that took place during childhood. Then, your child returns from rehab, only to fall back into some terrible trouble again. This story is the foundation for the emotional roller coaster of effectiveness called Ben Is Back, a film about the bond between a mother and her drug addict son. Let’s take a closer look and see why this movie should be seen by parents around the world.

From Rehab to the Real World

Released on December 7, 2018, and directed by Peter Hedges, Ben Is Back tells the story of Holly Burns (Julia Roberts), who drives home one morning to find her son Ben (Lucas Hedges) standing in the driveway of her home. While initially wary about his presence, Holly allows Ben to stay with her for 24 hours and orders him not to leave her sight. What follows is noting short of an emotional roller coaster as Ben and Holly’s world collapses onto itself.

Confrontation and Destruction

Sometimes, tough love is the best option for dealing with a son or daughter who is addicted to dangerous drugs, but what are you supposed to do when that child falls into a world of darkness right out of a horror story? Above anything else, Ben Is Back is an ode to a parent’s love and signifies a parent’s terrifying exposure to the reality of their child’s addiction. Throughout the film, Holly discovers more about her son than she ever wanted to know and must take dark turns in order to help him regain footing a second time.
