Once you finish inpatient rehab, it is important to continue treatment. Here is why outpatient treatment is helpful during recovery.

Outpatient Treatment During Recovery

Anyone fighting against addiction can tell you that the initial detox process isn’t easy. Attending a controlled, inpatient rehab helps to prepare you for life outside of the treatment center. However, once you’re on your own, it is important to follow up with an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program also.

  • Support is Necessary Early on in Recovery

The earlier you are in your recovery efforts, the more support you’ll need to face the obstacles associated with addiction. Attending a meeting once a week may not be enough to fortify the skills and lessons you learned while in rehab. On the other hand, you don’t quite need the intense therapy you achieved while you were there. An IOP is typically just the right amount of support for this stage in your journey.

  • What Takes Place in an IOP

Intensive outpatient treatment is nothing to be intimidated by. In many ways, it is much like the rehab center you recently left! Your treatment team usually consists of professionals such as counselors, physicians, and potentially even family therapists. You’ll have an individual treatment plan and recommendations that encourage your recovery.

IOP’s are typically attended for several hours in the mornings or evenings, allowing you to work them into your schedule around family life or work. Patients come in for services multiple days a week, as opposed to every day. Usually you’ll have individual and group therapy sessions, during which you’ll process your challenges and experiences post-rehab. These sessions are also great for reinforcing the skills you learned as an in-patient, that also support a clean and sober lifestyle.

  • Continuing to Treat a Dual Diagnosis

If you are also struggling with a dual diagnosis, where you suffer from addiction and a mental health condition together, it is very important to continue managing the condition as well as the symptoms. Common co-occurring conditions include anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, trauma, PTSD, and grief and loss.

At Asana Recovery, we understand how difficult recovering from these addictions through our daily work to help those struggling most from this disease. While some may believe they can make it alone, rehabilitation programs are essential in the fight to break dependency.

The road ahead is not a smooth or easy one, but you can traverse it if done so with the support of the right team. Counseling and aftercare processes can assist you by addressing the psychological facets that led you to addition and help you build a structure from which to better cope with life without succumbing to addiction.
