Wrestlers Whose Careers Were Destroyed by Drugs

Needless to say, when you work for a business where big is always better, a few problems are bound to arise here and there. Just ask the members of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It is one of the biggest sports entertainment companies on the planet (besides TNA Wrestling). Not to mention the pioneers of outrageous man-on-man brawls. Throughout the years, however, the WWE has also been the front for some pretty dangerous controversies. If you remember, the infamous steroid scandal of the 1990s. Aside from that, famous wrestlers like Eddie Guerrero, Test, and Miss Elizabeth died from tragic problems with drugs.

Now what about the wrestlers whose careers (not their lives) were destroyed by drugs? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

Joey Mercury

Fans of wrestling will recognize this man as a member of J&J Security. But, people who watched the iconic Aggression Era will instantly remember Joey Mercury. During those infamous years, he operated a tag-team division with John Morrison under MNM. They won a string of tag team matches. However, after breaking his nose after being hit in the head with a ladder, Mercury quickly descended into a dark world of prescription opioid addiction. Later, the WWE fired him. If not for the intervention of fellow wrestler CM Punk, Mercury would probably be homeless to this day.

Mr. Kennedy

Here is another example of one of the iconic wrestlers whose career was cut short by drugs. During his time in the WWE, Kennedy was known for his loud mouth. Not to mention his penchant for bullying. Needless to say, he was an on-screen champion. He won a US Championship and Money in the Bank Briefcase. However, just as he was about to be headlined as a main event, Kennedy was suspended for his use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in 2007. Later, in 2009, he was officially fired by the company. He is currently scouring for independent roles.

Sherri Martel

Also known as Sensational Sherri in the ring, Sherri Martel did not live the most wonderful life outside of the WWE world. Although she was a headlining woman during the 80s, the lovely lady immediately spiraled into a world of drug abuse after she became famous. During her career, Martel managed icons like Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase, and Shawn Michaels. However, the company eventually fired her due to her incessant use of drugs. Tragically, the addiction claimed her life in 2007.
