Imagine having to endure endless bouts of physical pain and recovery, followed more and more rounds of publicity and in-ring fights. Overall, these small details just scratch the surface of the daily schedule followed by members of World Wrestling Entertainment. Possibly one of the most prominent sports entertainment companies on the planet, WWE has a proficiency for producing titans, but even gods among men and women need to take a breather once in a while. In an industry fueled by the vision of “bigger is better,” you can bet that several drug and alcohol problems are bound to arise. Just ask WWE Superstar Rob Van Dam, who has described his battle with alcohol as “severe.”

Intoxication Was the Norm

In a recent interview (as part of a promotion for his documentary Headstrong) in 2016, Rob Van Dam discussed the severity of his alcohol abuse. What started as a casual conversation about comics on The Marvelists podcast quickly turned into an admission of sorts. As the former WWE champion explains, anyone who spent time with him in 2016 would have probably noticed he was intoxicated, all stemming from one tragedy after another. Van Dam describes that the trifecta of unhappiness included a divorce from his wife, the death of his dog, and, most tragic of all, the death of his father.

A Life of Chaos

Van Dam continues to talk about how he was a major risk-taker during this time, as well. He recalls moments when he would drive while under the influence of booze, and, to this day, he is overwhelmingly grateful he did not hurt anyone. Ultimately, Van Dam credits his girlfriend, Katie Forbes, for being the saving grace who pulled him out of the ditch.

Seeking Treatment for Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism

Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are dangerous mental illnesses that not only wreak havoc on a victim’s private life but can also drive a wedge into a public reputation. Even more frightening, you will not know if you are an addict unless you take one shot and begin down the path toward addiction. However, with the right mixture of perseverance and determination, you can easily get back on track and be happy once more.
